Nigeria’s House of Representatives has passed for second reading a bill seeking to amend the Proceeds of Crime (Recovery and Management) Act and related laws to harmonise the country’s anti-corruption and asset recovery framework.
Leading the debate, Plateau lawmaker Yusuf Gagdi said the reforms aim to close long-standing legal loopholes that have hampered the recovery, management, and disposal of illicit assets. He noted that recent efforts to amend the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Act would be incomplete without addressing overlapping provisions in other anti-corruption laws.

The proposed legislation introduces stronger safeguards for whistleblowers and witnesses, offering protection for those who testify in corruption cases. Lawmakers say the bill will provide a coherent structure for Nigeria’s asset recovery regime and improve accountability in the anti-corruption process.
