Nigeria’s House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to create a dedicated budget line for occupational safety and health across all ministries, departments, and agencies, beginning with the 2026 Appropriation Bill.
The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance raised by Kogi lawmaker David Zacharias, who linked frequent workplace accidents and unsafe conditions in public institutions to poor funding and weak policy enforcement.
Representative Zacharias cited the constitutional duty of government to protect workers’ health and welfare, warning that neglecting safety provisions undermines productivity and violates international labour standards.
The House directed relevant ministries and committees to collaborate with the Office of the Head of Service to ensure the inclusion and oversight of the new safety budget line.
