The House of Representatives has formally demanded the creation of a dedicated Police Downstream Security Desk to enhance the protection of Nigeria’s oil and gas infrastructure. Members made the call during a visit to the Nigeria Police Force headquarters in Abuja led by Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere.Â
If established, the desk is expected to improve coordination and joint operations with regulators to curb illegal activities affecting the downstream petroleum sector.
Ugochinyere said establishing a dedicated desk would enable rapid response to supply interruptions and strengthen coordination with regulatory bodies. Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, responded that the force has intensified intelligence-driven policing and multi-agency collaboration to protect energy assets.

Lawmakers said the enhanced structure is needed due to evolving security challenges in the petroleum industry. They argued that formal institutional mechanisms and increased resources would help sustain gains in stability and investor confidence in Nigeria’s downstream sector.
