Nigeria’s House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee has summoned 11 electricity distribution companies to explain a combined debt of ₦2.6 trillion owed to the federation account.
The decision followed an investigative hearing on the 2021 Auditor-General’s report, chaired by Rep. Bamidele Salam. The Managing Director of the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company, Johnson Akinnawo, confirmed the liabilities, presenting NBET records showing the debt profile as of September 2020.

The report further flagged irregularities, including ₦100 billion paid for undelivered power and ₦26 billion in unpaid electricity exports. Lawmakers have also resolved to summon other operators cited in the report.
