Reps Suspend Plenary Over Contractors’ Protest at National Assembly

Reps Approve Tinubu’s $2.35bn Loan, $500m Sovereign Sukuk Request

The House of Representatives has suspended plenary for one week following a protest by indigenous contractors at the National Assembly complex in Abuja.

The decision came after a motion moved by Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, who said the contractors had not been paid for projects completed in 2024 despite President Bola Tinubu’s directive for immediate payment. The motion was unanimously adopted during Tuesday’s sitting.

Earlier in the day, protesting contractors blocked the main gate of the National Assembly over the delayed payments, forcing security operatives to redirect staff and visitors through alternative routes. The demonstration caused gridlock around the area.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and other lawmakers had previously met with the contractors, while Finance Minister Wale Edun promised to settle outstanding debts. Lawmakers later voted to adjourn plenary sessions for one week to allow the government time to resolve the issue and restore normal operations at the complex.
