Resident Doctors Begin Nationwide Strike Over Welfare Demands

The National Association of Resident Doctors has begun a nationwide strike after the expiration of a 24-hour ultimatum to the federal government. Resident doctors, who make up the bulk of emergency ward staff in Nigerian hospitals, say the action will disrupt healthcare delivery across the country.

The association had earlier issued a 10-day ultimatum on September 1 for the government to meet its demands, later extending it by one day to September 11. NARD president Tope Osundara confirmed the strike began on Friday after what he called a lack of productive engagement from government officials.

The doctors are demanding payment of the 2025 medical residency training fund, settlement of arrears from the 2024 accoutrement allowance, and clearance of five months’ unpaid salary arrears from the recent medical salary structure review.

They are also asking government to reverse the downgrade of membership certificates of the West African Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. The association says the strike will continue until its concerns are addressed.
