Rights Group Seeks Removal of Ugandan ICJ Judge

The Arab Organisation for Human Rights in the UK has urged the International Court of Justice, ICJ, to dismiss Ugandan judge Julia Sebutinde, accusing her of breaching the court’s code of impartiality.

In a letter to fellow judges, the group argued Judge Sebutinde undermined the ICJ’s credibility after remarks to Uganda’s Daily Monitor newspaper, where she suggested her position was guided by religious loyalty to Israel.

Campaigners said her reliance on biblical narratives gave false legitimacy to Israeli actions in Gaza and contradicted the principles of international law. They warned such reasoning risked emboldening further atrocities against Palestinians.

Under the ICJ statute, judges found to lack independence can be removed with the consent of colleagues.

Judge Sebutinde was the sole dissenting voice when the court ordered provisional measures to protect Palestinians in January, a decision Israel’s judge partially supported.
