Rivers APC Rejects Impeachment Move Against Governor Fubara

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has rejected the impeachment process initiated by the Rivers State House of Assembly against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu. In a statement issued on Thursday, the party described the move as destabilising and unnecessary, while acknowledging the constitutional independence of the legislature.

The APC spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, said the party would not support what it called a resort to impeachment against an APC-led government. The party cautioned its members in the Assembly against yielding to external pressure and said budgetary concerns cited by lawmakers were covered by an existing ₦1.485 trillion appropriation approved in mid-2025, which it said is expected to run until August 2026.

The party’s response followed the commencement of impeachment proceedings during plenary presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, where Majority Leader Major Jack read allegations of gross misconduct against the governor under Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution. Twenty-six lawmakers signed the notice, while a separate allegation was presented against the deputy governor. Governor Fubara has yet to comment on the latest development.
