Rivers Assembly Begins Impeachment Proceedings against Governor Fubara

The Rivers State House of Assembly has begun impeachment proceedings against the governor, Siminalayi Fubara. The process was formally initiated during plenary on Thursday in Port Harcourt.

Lawmakers accused Governor Fubara and his deputy of gross misconduct. The session was presided over by the Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule, while the Leader of the Assembly, Major Jack, read out the charges signed by 26 members.

After the presentation, the Speaker said the notice of gross misconduct would be served on the governor within the next seven days, in line with constitutional provisions guiding impeachment proceedings.

The development comes amid renewed political tension in the state involving Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. Most members of the Rivers Assembly are considered loyal to Mr Wike, following recent party defections and prolonged disagreements within the state’s political leadership.
