The Rivers State House of Assembly has extended its ultimatum to the chairman and commissioners of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), giving them an additional 72 hours to appear before the House. The decision, reached during plenary on Friday in Port Harcourt, follows an earlier 48-hour deadline that expired without compliance. The officials are now expected to appear by Monday, March 10.
In response to the extension, the House suspended its planned recess, with Deputy Speaker Dumle Maol moving the motion to ensure lawmakers remain available to address the RSIEC issue. Meanwhile, Speaker Martin Amaewhule noted that Governor Siminalayi Fubara had also failed to present the 2025 budget within the given 48-hour timeframe, warning that the House would take action in due course.

The lawmakers’ probe follows the Supreme Court’s March 5 ruling, which annulled the October 5, 2024, local government election in Rivers State for violating the Electoral Act. RSIEC later scheduled fresh elections for August 9, 2025, a move that has prompted further scrutiny from the Assembly.
Despite the ultimatum and threats of arrest from lawmakers, RSIEC has yet to comment on the matter.
