Tension mounted in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, on Thursday as police barricaded a section of Aba Road leading to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Secretariat. The move came amid reports that the newly constituted Acting Executive Committee, formed after a court annulled the elected executive, was planning to take over the secretariat.
Although the planned takeover was later suspended, both factions held separate press briefings to assert control, further deepening the leadership crisis within the party.
Aaron Chukwuemeka, the factional chairman of the PDP executives recently restrained by a High Court, criticised the multiple ongoing court processes and appealed to Governor Siminalayi Fubara to mediate for peace. Meanwhile, the State Legal Adviser, Kingsley Chuku (SAN), stated that the party had not yet received a copy of the court ruling and confirmed plans to appeal once the proceedings were made available.

At a separate press event, Robinson Nname-Ewor, the Acting Chairman, announced the suspension of the takeover to prevent further escalation. He outlined conditions for the continued existence of the party, including the reinstatement of the PDP leadership under Governor Fubara and the formal recognition of the Acting Executive. The committee also revealed plans to set up a disciplinary panel to investigate alleged anti-party activities linked to the 2023 elections.
