Rivers State Defends Christmas Bonus for All Public Servants

The Rivers State Government has defended the payment of a N100,000 Christmas bonus to state lawmakers, saying the payment covered all public servants in the state. The clarification followed public debate over the legality and scope of the bonus.

The state’s permanent secretary in the Ministry of Information and Communications, Honour Sirawoo, said the payment was approved by Governor Siminalayi Fubara. He said the bonus was intended to appreciate workers for their service during the year.

According to Sirawoo, the payment applied to civil servants and other categories of public workers on the state payroll. He added that similar bonuses had been paid in previous years as part of staff welfare measures.

The explanation came after the Nigeria Labour Congress in Rivers State commended the payment. The state government said it remains committed to workers’ welfare and transparency in financial decisions.
