Rivers United returned to the summit of the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) with a 1-0 victory over Kano Pillars at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt, on Sunday. Aniekeme Okon’s first-half goal secured the win, as Rivers United successfully neutralised Kano Pillars’ attacking threats, including Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa and Rabiu Ali.
The win extends Rivers United’s unbeaten run to four matches and leaves them three points clear at the top with 29 points from 15 games. Meanwhile, Kano Pillars’ four-match unbeaten streak came to an end, and they are now winless in three matches, failing to score for the first time in five games.
Elsewhere, Ikorodu City FC delivered a stunning 4-1 victory against Akwa United at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos. The Lagos-based side scored twice in each half, handing Akwa United their seventh consecutive away defeat.
Heartland FC also staged a dramatic 3-2 comeback win against bottom-placed Nasarawa United. Two late goals in the dying minutes lifted the Owerri-based team to 10th on the log as they continued their fight to escape relegation.
