At least 71 people have been killed in a road accident in southern Ethiopia after a truck carrying passengers plunged into a river in Sidama state, about 300km south of Addis Ababa.
The Sidama Police Commission confirmed the death toll in a statement, citing Chief Inspector Daniel Sankura, who revealed that 68 males and three females had lost their lives in the crash. The accident occurred on Sunday around 5:30 pm local time when the vehicle missed a bridge on a winding road and fell into the river.

Some passengers were reportedly returning from a wedding ceremony, with multiple families suffering tragic losses. Survivors of the crash are receiving treatment at Bona General Hospital, according to the regional communication bureau, which had earlier reported a lower death toll of 60.
The Sidama health bureau has expressed its condolences to the victims’ families and pledged to release further details as investigations progress. Authorities are continuing efforts to ascertain the full scale of the tragedy.
