RSF drones target Sudan’s Khartoum in fourth day of sustained attacks

Drone attacks have again targeted Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, and its main airport, marking the fourth straight day of strikes by the Rapid Support Forces. Residents reported hearing explosions in the early hours of Friday as drones and surface-to-air missiles flew over the city, disrupting plans to resume air traffic.

The Khartoum International Airport had been scheduled to reopen this week after more than two years of closure due to the conflict. A Badr Airlines flight landed on Wednesday, but officials later confirmed that operations had been postponed indefinitely following renewed drone attacks.

The Sudanese Armed Forces regained control of Khartoum from the RSF in March, prompting some residents to return to homes damaged during the fighting. Many are now struggling to rebuild amid severe economic hardship, a weakened currency, and soaring prices of building materials.

Sudan’s war, which began in April 2023, has killed tens of thousands and displaced about 12 million people. The United Nations says around 30 million citizens remain in need of humanitarian assistance, making it one of the world’s largest ongoing crises.
