Russia Rejects Ukraine’s Call for 30-Day Ceasefire Extension

Russia has turned down a proposal from Ukraine to extend a three-day ceasefire declared by President Vladimir Putin, citing unresolved issues that must be addressed first.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed on Tuesday that Moscow had received President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s request for a 30-day truce but called it difficult to implement without clarity on key matters.

Zelenskyy had described the May 8 to 10 pause, which aligns with Russia’s World War II victory celebrations, as a political ploy, and urged a longer, unconditional ceasefire. But Peskov dismissed the call, saying Ukraine’s lack of response to the initial truce offer was itself manipulative.

The impasse comes as the United States, which proposed the longer ceasefire, pressures both sides to agree on a deal. Washington has expressed frustration with Russia’s refusal to compromise, while Ukraine has backed the US-led peace plan.
