Vladimir Putin, President of Russia has announced plans to call up thousands of extra troops from the country’s reserves to fight in Ukraine.

The mobilization applies to only 300,000 of Russia’s 25 million military reservists who are people that have done their compulsory military service.

The Russian President has described the partial mobilization as necessary to ensure Russian territorial integrity.

The move is a response to Ukraine whose troops reclaimed vast amounts of territory in Russian-occupied parts of the country in the last few days.

OVD-info, a Russian human rights organization, reports that protests broke out in Russia following the President’s announcement, leading to the arrest of more than 750 people.
