Rwanda stunned Nigeria with a 2-1 victory in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on Monday. Samuel Chukwueze’s brilliant solo goal in the 59th minute gave the Super Eagles an initial lead, but two quick goals from the Amavubi turned the game around, silencing the Nigerian crowd at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
Despite the impressive win, Rwanda failed to qualify for the tournament, finishing behind Benin Republic, who secured the group’s second ticket. The loss shattered Nigeria’s hopes of completing the qualification series unbeaten, despite already securing their place in the competition after Libya’s earlier win over Rwanda.
With Super Eagles key players Ademola Lookman, Ola Aina, and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali unavoidably absent, interim coach Austine Eguavoen made significant changes to the lineup, opting to rest star striker Victor Osimhen and handing Maduka Okoye a starting role in goal.
