SACD Sues TikTok Over Unauthorised Use of Intellectual Works

A French trade group representing authors and screenwriters has filed a copyright lawsuit against TikTok, alleging the platform used protected works without permission. The Society of Dramatic Authors and Composers (SACD), which represents around 60,000 writers for cinema, television, theatre, and comedy, filed the suit in Paris on Thursday.

SACD said TikTok used content from its repertoire, including dialogue and extracts from popular films such as ‘Asterix and Obelix’ and the comedy ‘Brice de Nice’, as well as sketches and animated series, without authorisation or proper compensation. The group claims that four years of discussions with the platform failed to resolve the issue.

The organisation is seeking compensation for losses suffered by authors whose works have been exploited on TikTok. SACD has also demanded financial transparency from the company to determine the amount owed to copyright holders.

TikTok, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance with its European headquarters in Ireland, has not responded to requests for comment. The first hearing in the case is scheduled for March 18, 2026.
