The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, NSIB, has launched an inquiry into a helicopter crash involving a Sikorsky SK76c that occurred off the coast of Calabar on Thursday, October 24, at around 11:22 AM local time. The helicopter, which was conducting a routine flight, plunged into the Atlantic Ocean.
The helicopter, which was carrying eight individuals, six passengers and two crew, was en route from Port Harcourt Military Base to the Anton Offshore Facility, lost communication with air traffic controllers at 10:52 AM, shortly before the crash. Despite operating under Visual Flight Rules (VFR), no Emergency Locator Transmitter signal was transmitted, which complicated the initial search efforts.
Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, the Director of Public Affairs at NSIB, confirmed that search and rescue operations were launched immediately. NSIB is working to locate the wreckage, and a preliminary report will be released soon to provide updates.
