General Abdourahamane Tchiani, leader of the Niger junta, has criticised sanctions imposed by the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS), saying they were unjustified.
The broadcast followed his meeting with a delegation of ECOWAS led by former Nigerian Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd).
He said the sanctions were unnecessary, adding that they were aimed at punishing the “good people” of Niger, some of whom, he says, including children, were dying in hospitals due to a lack of electricity.
He also says border closures makes access to food, drugs and other essentials very difficult.

Still with the Nigerien situation,
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has rejected the junta’s three-year power transition plan.
ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Abdel-Fatau Musa, during an interview with the BBC on yesterday, said General Tchiani’s proposal is just a smokescreen for dialogue and diplomacy.
