Sanwo-Olu Declares War on Illegal Dredging in Lagos

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has vowed to clamp down on illegal dredging, unregulated sand mining, and reckless land reclamation, warning offenders will face stiff penalties. Speaking at the inaugural Lagos Waterfront Summit, he said such practices endanger both the economy and environment, with communities already displaced by erosion and flooding.

The governor announced measures to strengthen the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development, empower local communities, and enforce stricter regulations. He noted Lagos has lost more than 80 percent of its shoreline in five decades, a trend that cannot continue.

Former Environment Commissioner, Dr Muiz Banire, described the lagoon as “the soul of Lagos” and called for a dedicated Lagoon Authority to streamline oversight. Other speakers, including Commissioner Dayo Bush-Alebiosu, warned that unchecked urbanisation and climate change threaten livelihoods, urging urgent and coordinated action to safeguard the state’s fragile ecosystem.
