Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has described the death of veteran journalist and Newswatch co-founder Dan Agbese as a colossal loss to Nigeria’s media landscape. In a condolence message issued by his media aide, Gboyega Akosile, the governor said the passing of the respected columnist and author was both painful and deeply felt across the profession.
Mr. Agbese, who died at 81, was widely regarded as a mentor and role model to generations of journalists. Sanwo-Olu praised his courage, editorial integrity, and influential role in shaping modern Nigerian journalism, noting his leadership at The Nigeria Standard, New Nigerian, Radio Benue, and later as Editor-in-Chief of Newswatch.

The governor extended condolences to the Agbese family, colleagues, and the wider media community, praying for strength and comfort during this period of loss.
