Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces have retaken control of the Hadramout and al-Mahra governorates from the United Arab Emirates-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC). The operation, led by Homeland Shield forces, restored government control over the eastern port city of Mukalla and all districts of both provinces, according to officials.
Rashad al-Alimi, head of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, said the forces achieved “record success” in reclaiming military and security positions near the Saudi border. The campaign follows an escalation after the STC seized the provinces in early December, which make up nearly half of Yemen’s territory.

Since the operation began, at least 80 STC fighters have been reported killed, 152 wounded, and 130 taken captive. Saudi-backed airstrikes targeted STC positions, while government sources said life was gradually returning to normal in cities like Seiyun as state institutions resumed services.
