Semenya vows to challenge Olympic gender testing policy

South Africa’s double Olympic champion Caster Semenya says she will challenge a new gender testing policy introduced by the International Olympic Committee for female athletes.

The policy, unveiled last week, will require competitors in the female category to undergo genetic testing, including cheek swabs or saliva analysis, to determine eligibility. It is expected to become a universal standard across elite sports.

Semenya, who has a Difference of Sexual Development and has been involved in a long-running dispute with World Athletics, said the rule undermines women’s rights and dignity. She questioned the scientific basis of the policy and called for greater consultation with affected athletes.

The IOC says the measures are aimed at ensuring fairness, safety and integrity in competition, particularly in events requiring strength, power and endurance. Semenya said she and others will continue to speak out against the decision.
