The Senate has passed a bill to establish the Nigeria Mines Rangers Service to curb illegal mining and improve enforcement across the country. The move aims to enhance regulation and strengthen security in the solid minerals sector.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals Development, Ekong Samson, presented the report that led to the bill’s passage. The new agency will be responsible for securing mining sites and ensuring compliance with national mining laws.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio said the initiative will reinforce existing regulations under the Mining Act and ensure Nigeria’s mineral wealth is better managed. Other lawmakers, including Garba Maidoki from Kebbi South, also backed the bill, stressing the need for on-site monitoring of mining operations.
Following consideration in the Committee of the Whole, the bill scaled its third reading and is expected to move to the House of Representatives for concurrence.
