Senate Calls for Investigation into Killings in Gombe State

The Senate has called on the Inspector General of Police, the Chief of Army Staff, and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the attacks and killings of innocent Nigerians in Billiri Local Government Area of Gombe State. The attacks, carried out by armed men last Thursday, left several dead and caused widespread fear.

The Senate also urged the security agencies to arrest the perpetrators and bring them to justice. In addition, lawmakers recommended the establishment of modern ranches across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to improve safety and support both farmers and herders.

The call for action came after Senator Anthony Siyako Yaro of Gombe South moved a motion highlighting the urgency of addressing recurring banditry, killings, and the displacement of residents in Gombe State. The Senate resolved to pass a bill to regulate economic activities under the ECOWAS treaty concerning free movement across borders.

Senator Yaro stressed that it is the government’s constitutional responsibility to protect citizens, while Deputy President of the Senate, Barau I. Jibrin, called for stronger measures against bandits, particularly in Northern Nigeria. Following the debate, the Senate resolved to establish a joint police and military taskforce in Billiri to prevent further violence.
