The Senate Committee on Public Accounts has called on the office of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to provide an explanation regarding the 3,907 firearms reported missing within the Nigerian Police Force. The demand follows a report from the Auditor General of the Federation, highlighting the missing weapons.
Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, Deputy Chief Whip and Vice Chairman of the Committee, emphasised the importance of accounting for the firearms to aid in budgetary planning. The IGP appeared before the Committee on Tuesday but excused himself, leaving Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Abdul Suleiman to answer questions.

The Committee insisted that the AIG disclose the whereabouts of the missing firearms, with some senators expressing their dissatisfaction with the request for a closed-door session. Senators Victor Umeh and Joel Onawakpo-Thomas, among others, supported the demand for transparency.
In response, the police claimed that some of the firearms were taken from officers who were killed in action, but insisted no weapons were unaccounted for. The Committee, however, remained unsatisfied with the explanation and has summoned the IGP to appear again before the Committee on Monday.
