Senate Moves to Sanction Nigerians Convicted Abroad

Nigeria’s Senate has advanced a bill proposing the suspension of international passports for Nigerians convicted of crimes overseas for at least ten years. The measure, sponsored by Senator Abubakar Bello, seeks to amend the Passport (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act to curb criminal activity abroad and restore the credibility of the Nigerian passport.

Presenting the bill, Senator Onawo Ogwoshi said it was vital to protect the country’s image and deter misconduct that subjects law-abiding Nigerians to discrimination and visa denials. He described the situation as a “state of emergency” for national dignity.

Under the proposal, passports of convicted Nigerians would be withdrawn for a decade after serving their sentences. Lawmakers believe the move will reinforce accountability and send a strong signal that Nigeria does not condone criminal behaviour by its citizens abroad.
