The Senate has launched a full investigation into Nigeria’s aviation safety standards following revelations by the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) on a runway overrun involving an Air Peace aircraft in Port Harcourt.
The motion, raised by Senator Abdulfatai Buhari, called for urgent measures to strengthen aviation oversight. The Senate directed its Aviation Committee to liaise with the NSIB, NCAA, FAAN, and airline operators, with a detailed report expected in six weeks.

Lawmakers also urged the Federal Government to build a second runway at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport to ease congestion and enhance safety. They expressed concern that the June 22 Air Peace incident exposed serious lapses in runway conditions, lighting, and regulatory supervision, warning that recurring near-misses could threaten public confidence in the sector.
