Senate President Godswill Akpabio has voiced concern about potential backlash following the passage of a controversial Social Media Bill through its second reading.
The proposed law, sponsored by Senator Ned Nwoko, seeks to amend the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 by requiring social media companies like Facebook and X to establish physical offices in Nigeria. Senator Nwoko says the bill aims to ensure tech giants contribute to Nigeria’s economy.

The bill also mandates that bloggers operating in Nigeria maintain verifiable employee records. While Akpabio stressed that the legislation is not intended to stifle free speech, he said it would help structure the digital economy.
The bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Information Communication Technology and Cyber Security for further review and a public hearing. The committee is expected to submit its findings within two months.
