The Senate has taken a step towards tighter regulation of social media platforms, advancing a bill that would require international tech firms to establish physical offices in Nigeria. Sponsored by Senator Ned Nwoko, the proposed legislation passed its second reading on Tuesday.
The bill seeks to amend the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, compelling social media companies to comply with local laws by maintaining a physical presence. It also extends regulations to bloggers, mandating them to set up verifiable offices in any state capital and keep proper employee records.

Additionally, the legislation proposes the creation of a unified national body for bloggers, headquartered in Abuja.
If enacted, the bill would introduce stricter oversight of Nigeria’s digital space, with Senator Nwoko arguing it would ensure a “fair and just” online environment.
