Nigeria’s Senate has rejected written explanations submitted by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, over unaccounted funds totalling ₦210 trillion between 2017 and 2023. The Senate Committee on Public Accounts, chaired by Senator Aliyu Wadada, dismissed the response after NNPCL officials failed to appear in person at Tuesday’s hearing, despite choosing the date themselves.
The Auditor-General’s report had raised 19 queries over the company’s financial statements, citing ₦103 trillion in alleged cash calls and ₦107 trillion in receivables. The committee said the figures were contradictory and lacked transparency, describing them as “unjustifiable and unacceptable.”

Senator Wadada warned that future absences by NNPCL’s management would not be tolerated, insisting the Group Chief Executive must personally account for the disputed sums.
