The Senate has suspended debate on proposed amendments to the 2022 Electoral Act after intense deliberations during Thursday’s plenary. Lawmakers clashed over the scope and timing of the reforms, prompting a decision to defer the bill for further consultation.

During the debate, Senate President Godswill Akpabio revisited the 2019 elections, claiming he was a victim of electoral injustice in his Akwa Ibom West senatorial contest. He criticised the prosecution of the returning officer while alleging that the former Resident Electoral Commissioner was never held accountable.
The amendment bill will return for consideration on a later legislative day.
