The Senate has announced plans to hold a closed executive briefing on the United States air strikes carried out on December 25, 2025, on suspected terrorist targets in Sokoto State. The decision follows concerns raised by Senator Abdul Ningi, who represents Bauchi Central, over what he described as the exclusion of the National Assembly from consultations before the operation.
Raising the matter under Order 42 during plenary, Senator Ningi said the air strikes amounted to an infringement on Nigeria’s territorial integrity and should have involved legislative oversight. He argued that the National Assembly, which has constitutional responsibilities in national security and foreign military engagements, was not consulted. He also warned that allowing the executive arm to approve foreign military operations without legislative input could set a precedent.

Responding, Senate President Godswill Akpabio said arrangements had already been made to brief senators in an executive session but that the meeting was postponed following the suspension of legislative activities in honour of the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who died on December 31, 2025.
