Senator Ali Ndume has said the National Assembly is not responsible for screening presidential nominees, but only confirms candidates cleared by security agencies. The Borno South lawmaker made the clarification while reacting to the resignation of former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, over alleged certificate forgery.
Senator Ndume explained that background checks, particularly by the Department of State Services, DSS, must be completed before any nominee is forwarded to the Senate. He stressed that the chamber relies on such reports before confirmation.

The senator noted that document forgery is a wider national issue, not limited to politicians, and recalled that the Senate had previously rejected a nominee after adverse findings by the DSS during the verification process.
