Senegalese AFCON final detainees in Morocco begin hunger strike

Eighteen Senegalese football supporters detained in Morocco over disturbances during last month’s Africa Cup of Nations final have begun a hunger strike while awaiting trial, according to their lawyer.

The lawyer, Patrick Kabou, said the group was arrested on 18 January in Rabat after Senegal defeated hosts Morocco in the AFCON final, following crowd trouble linked to a late penalty awarded to Morocco.

Court proceedings have been delayed, with hearings in late January and on Thursday adjourned, the latter due to a nationwide lawyers’ strike in Morocco, and the trial is now expected to resume next week.
