Serbian Opposition Lawmakers Set Off Smoke Grenades in Parliament Protest

Serbian opposition lawmakers disrupted a parliamentary session on Tuesday by setting off smoke grenades and tear gas in protest against the government and in support of ongoing student-led demonstrations. The chaos erupted after the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) approved the session’s agenda, triggering scuffles between opposition politicians and security guards.

The turmoil resulted in injuries, with Speaker Ana Brnabic confirming that SNS lawmaker Jasmina Obradovic suffered a stroke and remains in critical condition. Despite the disruption, the parliament continued its session as members of the ruling coalition debated amid the noise of opposition whistles and horns.

The protests stem from four months of student-led demonstrations, which have drawn support from teachers, farmers, and other citizens. Anger over corruption and government incompetence intensified after a railway station roof collapse in Novi Sad killed 15 people in November, despite recent renovations. Outside parliament, protesters observed a moment of silence in memory of the victims.

Lawmakers were set to discuss increased funding for universities, a key student demand, and the resignation of Prime Minister Milos Vucevic. However, other agenda items introduced by the ruling coalition further inflamed tensions, leading to the chaotic scenes inside parliament. Protest leaders have called for a major rally in Belgrade on March 15.
