Heavy flooding has swept through farmlands in Paikoro and Lapai Local Government Areas of Niger State following intense rainfall on Sunday, prompting fresh concerns over a looming food crisis.
In Lapai, at least 18 communities including Dere, Ebwa, Muye, and Kuchi Kakanda were badly affected, with crops and farmland washed away. The Kafin Koro area of Paikoro also suffered extensive damage, although assessments are still ongoing.

No casualties have been reported, but the floodwaters have severely impacted agricultural livelihoods in key food-producing zones.
The Niger State Government has issued urgent evacuation orders to vulnerable communities. Special Adviser to the Governor, Jonathan Vatsa, urged residents to relocate, stressing safety over ancestral ties.
The incident follows warnings from NiMet, which identified 15 LGAs at risk. Experts warn of rising food prices and supply disruptions as the harvest season nears.
