Seychelles will hold a rerun presidential election after neither of the two leading candidates secured an outright majority in the weekend vote. The electoral authority said incumbent President Wavel Ramkalawan received 46.4 percent while opposition candidate Patrick Herminie polled 48.8 percent.
The authority did not say when the rerun will take place. Early voting began on Thursday, with the majority of voters casting their ballots on Saturday.

Herminie’s United Seychelles party, which ruled the country from 1977 until 2020, is seeking a return to power. President Ramkalawan, whose party, Linyon Demokratik Seselwa, won five years ago, is campaigning for a second term on economic recovery, social development, and environmental sustainability.
The campaign was overshadowed by controversy over a government lease of Assomption Island to a Qatari company for luxury development, and by rising concern over a heroin crisis affecting nearly half the nation’s adult population. Climate change and sovereignty also remain key issues for voters in the Indian Ocean nation.
