Siasia Denies Bribery Claims Involving Mikel, Decries Media Misrepresentation
Samson Siasia

Former Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia has refuted reports suggesting that ex-Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel or his agent attempted to bribe him with €50,000 for a place in Nigeria’s 2008 Olympic football squad.

Mr. Siasia, who led Nigeria’s U23 team to silver in Beijing, clarified comments he made in a recent interview, insisting he never accused Mikel or his representative, John Shittu, of offering inducements.

Speaking on a Brila FM interview, Mr. Siasia expressed disappointment over how his remarks had been taken out of context, warning that his reputation was being unfairly damaged.

His comments follow legal threats from Mr. Shittu, who has demanded a retraction and ₦250 million in damages.

Mikel Obi, who missed the 2008 Games after not participating in qualifiers, would later captain Nigeria to bronze at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
