The Defence Headquarters says an unspecified number of Nigerian soldiers have been killed in a terrorist attack on a military base in Benisheikh, Borno State. The assault happened at about half past midnight on Thursday, according to a statement by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja.
He said troops under Brigadier General Oseni Braimah of the 29 Brigade engaged the attackers with what he described as superior firepower, forcing them to retreat and abandon the operation.
The military confirmed that some soldiers died during the encounter, adding that the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, has paid tribute to those killed in the line of duty. The army says it is withholding further details until families of the victims are formally notified.

The Defence Headquarters also urged the public to disregard unverified reports, including claims about the fate of a brigadier general. It says clearance operations are ongoing to track fleeing insurgents, while no group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
