Six South African activists detained by Israel while attempting to deliver aid to Gaza say they were subjected to harsher treatment because of South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. The group, which included Mandla Mandela, grandson of Nelson Mandela, claimed they were singled out once Israeli officials identified their nationality.
Two Muslim women among them alleged they were stripped and had their hijabs forcibly removed—treatment they said was not extended to others detained. Israel has denied the allegations, saying all activists were treated lawfully and offered voluntary deportation.

The six were part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a fleet intercepted by Israeli forces while attempting to breach the Gaza blockade. Their detention has reignited diplomatic tensions between Pretoria and Tel Aviv over Israel’s actions in Gaza and South Africa’s continued legal challenge.
