South African authorities are set to annul the identity and travel documents of Chidinma Adetshina, the reigning Miss Universe Nigeria. Tommy Makhode, an official from the Department of Home Affairs, DHA, disclosed this plan to a parliamentary committee on Tuesday.
Born in Soweto in 2001, Miss Adetshina is of Igbo descent through her father, while her mother is reported to be a naturalised South African citizen of Mozambican origin. Her participation in the Miss South Africa pageant sparked controversy over her nationality, leading to significant social media backlash.
DHA official Makhode also said that Chidinma’s mother would also have her documents revoked, as both failed to meet a deadline to justify their eligibility to retain their identity papers.
