A South Korean court has issued an arrest warrant for impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol over his brief declaration of martial law, marking the first time such action has been taken against a sitting president in the country.
The Seoul Western District Court approved the warrant on Tuesday, following a request from the Joint Investigation Headquarters. The body, comprising officials from the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO), police, and the defence ministry, is investigating Yoon for alleged insurrection and abuse of power.

The Presidential Security Service (PSS) stated it would handle the warrant in accordance with legal procedures. However, Yoon’s security detail had previously blocked investigators from executing search warrants at key presidential locations.
Authorities have yet to confirm when Yoon might be taken into custody. If arrested, investigators would have 48 hours to decide whether to apply for a detention warrant for further questioning or to release him.
