Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has unveiled proposals in the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution, highlighting gender inclusion, youth empowerment, and formal roles for traditional rulers. Speaking at a citizens’ roundtable in Owerri, he said the process was shaped by wide consultations across the country to reflect national aspirations. He was represented by House Leader, Prof Julius Ihonvbere.

The Speaker stressed the importance of traditional rulers in maintaining order and preserving culture, adding that the House is exploring ways to strengthen their roles within democratic governance. He also reaffirmed commitment to grassroots development, pledging stronger collaboration with state assemblies and local councils to deepen devolution of power.
He noted that young people remain central to Nigeria’s democratic future. Through mentorship, training and skills development, the House aims to prepare future leaders for national service.
