Spotify Reports That Heartbreak Anthems Surge in Nigeria as Valentine’s Day Approaches

Lagos, Nigeria – Music streaming giant Spotify has reported a dramatic rise in the number of heartbreak songs streamed in Nigeria during the Valentine’s Day season, with figures soaring by 626 per cent between 2022 and 2024.

In a statement released on Thursday, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, Phiona Okumu, noted that Nigerians are increasingly turning to music as a means of expressing their emotions.

The data also revealed a striking gender disparity in streaming habits. On Valentine’s Day itself, male listeners in Nigeria streamed heartbreak tracks at a rate 362 per cent higher than in previous years, compared to a 169 per cent increase among female listeners.

As Nigerians join the rest of the world in marking Valentine’s Day today, the figures suggest that for many, love songs may be taking a melancholic turn.
