As Nigeria marked the 2025 International Day of Peace, prominent voices have urged the Federal Government to urgently address worsening insecurity, particularly along the country’s porous borders. At an event in Abuja, also commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution, Professor Jerry Gana warned that unchecked arms inflows and cross-border criminality pose serious threats to peace and national survival.

He stressed that peace is not merely the absence of conflict but rests on justice, fairness, and responsible leadership. Professor Gana argued that without decisive action, insecurity will continue to undermine development and prosperity.
The Institute’s Director General, Dr Joseph Ochogwu, highlighted the need for sustained investment in peacebuilding, warning that violent extremism, inequality, and disinformation are worsening Nigeria’s fragile security landscape. He described the day’s theme, ‘Act Now for a Peaceful World’, as a timely call to action.
