The Rivers State Government has inaugurated a committee to address recurring conflicts between farmers and herders across the state. The move is aimed at promoting peaceful coexistence and protecting the state’s agricultural economy.
Speaking at the inauguration in Port Harcourt, Secretary to the State Government, Ibibia Worika, who also chairs the committee, said the initiative was a proactive step to prevent violence, mediate disputes, and foster dialogue. He emphasised that agriculture, though vital, has been disrupted by clashes that often lead to loss of lives and economic hardship.

Worika noted that the committee’s duties include identifying early warning signs of tension, advising on land use and resource management, and promoting non-violent, community-based solutions. It will also champion advocacy and sensitisation to build mutual understanding.
Members of the committee include representatives from the traditional institution, security agencies, farmers, herders, civil society, and relevant ministries. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture will serve as its secretary.
