State Electoral Commissions need to be liberated from stronghold of governors, says Yiaga Africa

Yiaga Africa has said most of the recently held local government elections in the country fall short of electoral integrity standards, and are a travesty of democratic elections.

In a statement on Monday, the Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, Samson Itodo, said in order for the country to harness the benefits of the Supreme Court ruling granting financial autonomy to local governments, electoral reform must be extended to local government elections to liberate State Independent Electoral Commissions from what he calls, the stronghold of state governors.
